Ministry seeks to divide Russia into 14 macro-regions

MOSCOW, Aug 27 (PRIME) -- The Economic Development Ministry has developed a strategy for spatial development that implies dividing Russia into 14 macro-regions to enhance interregional interaction, a spokesperson for the ministry told PRIME on Monday.

“Macro-regions are not administrative-territorial units. They are formed to enhance interregional interaction in the sphere of infrastructure, investment and social policy,” the spokesperson said.

“Macro-regions are formed taking into account social and economic ties, including settlement systems, transport ties.”

The ministry plans to submit the strategy to the government in September, and the document could be approved in November.

The macro-regions will be: Central, Central-Black Earth, Northern, North-Western, Southern, North Caucasus, Volga-Kamsky, Volga-Ural, Ural, West Siberian, South Siberian, Yenisei, Baikal, and Far Eastern.
